Abstract: | This article reviews the context and relevance of training programmes for community development cadres in The Gambia. It discusses community development before 1977, the creation, in 1977, of the Department of Community Development, and the establishment of the Rural Development Institute (RDI), the training strategy of the RDI, and the relevance of RDI training to community-based integrated rural development. It concludes that the promotion of personnel development which The Gambia government initiated in the rural sector is a realistic policy worthy of emulation by other countries having similar economic backgrounds.
