Abstract:In 1955 the ANC responded to the introduction of Bantu Education in South Africa by launching a school boycott. This boycott has increasingly become a reference point for those involved in current struggles against the State's education policy. The 1955 movement is discussed here in order to examine, on the one hand what the experience of the 1950s may tell us about the dynamics of educational existence and the establishment of alternative educational systems, and on the other hand to ask what differentiates the situation of the 1950s from that of today. The experience of the 1955-1956 boycotts, and their ultimate failure to prevent the imposition of Bantu Education, has implications for an understanding of the contemporary conflicts over education. At the same time the contrasts between the two periods help to highlight the dramatic social changes affecting the education struggle. Bibliogr., ref.
