Abstract: | This article surveys economic development in Libya during the period 1961-1986. It analyses the relationship between the economic, social and political spheres in the country, and in particular how economic policies have effected social and political transformations, and how these in turn have had a major impact on economic policies. Five phases are distinguished in Libya's economic development: the rentier State (1961-1969), the revolutionary State (1969-1973), a State in transition (1973-1975), the socialist State (1976-1980), and a State in crisis (1980-1986). Conclusion is that, despite the country's enormous financial resources, the Libyan experiment in economic development has not been successful. Ref. |
