Abstract:After describing the political and economic setting in Nigeria in brief, the author presents figures for Nigeria's labour force participation rate, noting, amongst others, that out of 800,000 fifteen year olds who entered the labour force in 1965, about 420,000 had only primary education, with Kwara State having quite a substantial amount of this number. Despite progress made in absorbing primary school leavers into postprimary education, there are still tens of thousands of primary school leavers entering the labour force in Kwara State annually. The problems posed by this group are outlined. The solution may lie partially in providing varied curriculum in postprimary schools to accommodate all youths irrespective of talent and ability. At the same time, there is need to quicken the pace of economic development projects to create more employment opportunities. Bibliogr.
