Abstract: | Examination of the relationship between migration to South Africa and agricultural development (or the lack thereof) in the South African periphery. Using Lesotho as a case study, the following questions were dealt with: first, what level of incomes are migrants currently earning, and what level of real agricultural incomes in Lesotho would be required for them to remain in Lesotho; and, second, what are the requirements for agricultural enterprises capable of generating the necessary incomes, and what are the implied strategies for agricultural development? The most important finding was that with adequate land in moderate climatic zones the necessary levels of real income can be generated from simple rotations of traditional field crops with improved practices. This is in contrast to arguments contending that agricultural development in Lesotho should focus on intensive horticulture and livestock activities, as they alone are capable of generating the necessary surplus.
