Abstract: | Description of the beliefs and cults of three Igbo deities - Chi, Eke and Ikenga - which are linked with personal achievements. The cult of Chi emphasizes women's achievements; Eke is the cult of the ancestral guardian, practised by both men and women; and the Ikenga cult promotes men's achievements only. These cults symbolize three factors which in Igbo psychology determine the self-actualization of the individual: destiny, inherited ancestral traits, and personal efforts. Human resourcefulness is symbolized by the Ikenga cult, while the factors which transcend human resourcefulness are symbolized by the cults of Chi and Eke. Bibliogr., ref. |
