Abstract: | Retirement is defined in this paper as permanent withdrawal from the labour force. The retirement process is examined as it occurs in southern Nigeria, where change from traditional customs to new, official norms is taking place. The study analyses the age at retirement and the reasons for retirement, and how these vary between rural and urban residents and between men and women. Urban males are much more exposed to bureaucratic norms than the other sectors of the population. The findings suggest that, judging by local experience, mandatory retirement at 60 on the model of industrialized countries is either too early or too late. It is satisfactory in those rare cases where an adequate pension can be provided, but the majority of workers would prefer gradual withdrawal from the labour force in line with declining physical capacity.
