| Abstract: | This article compiles information on Nigerian literature in English which the author gathered participating in conferences and debates, attending lectures and seminars, and interviewing writers and critics. The choice of issues presented - African literature versus African literatures, the language controversy, literary forms, the writer and his subject matter - was determined by their recurrence in debates on the one hand, and by their relevance for teaching experiences involving African literature in the West on the other.
