Abstract: | Reproduction of two nineteenth-century descriptions of locusts in the Bornu area, roughly on the eastern and southeastern borders of Lake Chad, preceded by an introduction providing the historical setting. The first account is taken from the book 'African native literature, or Proverbs, tales, fables, & historical fragments in the Kanuri of Bornu language, to which are added a translation of the above and a Kanuri-English vocabulary', written by Rev. S.W. KOELLE and published by the Church Missionary Society in London in 1854. The second locust account is taken from Gustav NACHTIGAL's 'Sahara and Sudan', first published in German between 1879 and 1889. Notes, ref. |
