Abstract:The objective of this essay, which is part of a larger project on the liberation struggles in southern Africa, is to look at the current anticommunism in southern Africa in historical perspective, and to demonstrate that while anticommunism itself may have been directly raised as an issue intermittently, its use has been part of the economic, social, political and ideological arsenal of the colonizing powers to squash the national liberation struggles. Sections: Introduction - The colonial discourse - Which history will prevail in southern Africa? - East-West confrontation and the elimination of national histories - What is at stake in southern Africa?
