Abstract:This article outlines the main characteristics of wood-fuel production and use on the Freetown peninsula, Sierra Leone, and highlights the human and physical implications or consequences of the wood-fuel delivery system's structure and functioning. In particular, it examines the nature of and justification for proposed modifications to the system and assesses them in the light of their relevance to current realities. It is shown that the socioecology of firewood and charcoal on the peninsula remains largely unknown. The significance of 'quality control' in wood-fuel consumption has been largely overlooked. While a centralized firewood project like the one being proposed is undoubtedly capable of satisfying the quantity component of demand, it is unlikely to fulfil consumer expectations of the quality component. This can, however, be easily remedied by incorporating appropriate folk ecological perspectives in firewood management plans. Bibliogr., notes, ref., sum. in French.
