Abstract:In 1980 W.L. NIEWOUDT published an article on 'Value and rent on farm land' in this journal (Vol. 48, p. 389-397) in which he suggested that land rent data be used as an additional check on cost data by deducting rent from gross income per hectare. This article verifies this advice with an application to the South African sugar industry where cost of production data play an important role in setting sugarcane prices for farmers. A discussion on the meaning of rent is followed by examples of caneland rent and values and a discussion on the determination of sugarcane production costs. The final section tests the hypothesis that land rents are a useful check on cost of production data. Bibliogr.
