Title:Hausa text of the draft constitution for nigeria: a case study of the Hausa neologisms

Abstract:Analysis of Hausa neologisms, derived from the Hausa text of Nigeria's Draft Constitution of 1976. Thirteen groups of new words were found: 1) Hausa words which obtained an additional meaning; 2) combinations of Hausa words; 3) combinations of Hausa and English words; 4) English loanwords; 5) hybrid compounds of English words; 6) compounds of Arabic and Hausa words; 7) Arabic loanwords; 8) hybrid compounds of Arabic words; 9) hybrid compounds of Hausa, English and Arabic words; 10) compounds of English and Arabic loanwords; 11) explanations in English or Hausa; 12) descriptions; 13) English words. The author concludes that the Hausa language shows a considerable ability to express almost every idea which is new to the indigenous culture. Ref.
