Abstract: | In February 1986 the author interviewed 20 Oromo refugees from Ethiopia in Damazin, the capital of Blue Nile Province, Sudan. Data from these interviews are presented in the following sections: The refugees (general characteristics, date of arrival in the Sudan, places of origin, ethnic identity, education, original occupation, occupation at the time of interview) - Reasons for leaving Ethiopia (economic pressures, conscription, political opposition, closure of Koranic schools, fear of prison, forced resettlement, education, better standard of living) - Views of the future. Most of these refugees desire to return home but consider it impossible under the present regime. The influence of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) is strong; the difference between those who simply wish for a change in government policies and those who specify a 'free Oromia' underlines this.
