| Abstract: | In December 1980, the followers of Maitatsine - a Cameroonian religious teacher - in Kano, northern Nigeria, revolted; the city was convulsed by what was virtually civil war, and 4177 died, among them Maitatsine himself. New risings broke out in Rigasa and Bulumkutu (1982), Yola (1984), and Gombe (1985). This paper, which was originally presented at the New Zealand Religious Studies Association Conference in Dunedin, August 1985, studies these risings and the social forces which produced them. It also outlines other recent manifestations of militant Islam in northern Nigeria, which have sometimes led to conflict. The disturbances are explained primarily in terms of Nigeria's current economic problems. Notes, ref. |
