Abstract:The inclusion of dairy products in the diet of children with small intestinal enteropathy and lactase deficiency may exacerbate their diarrhoea. In the present study the absorption of the lactose of milk and yogurt, and the clinical tolerance to these products, was compared in malnourished children with chronic diarrhoea and intestinal lactase deficiency. Nine Algerian boys, aged 7-29 months, with chronic diarrhoea, jejunal villous atrophy, and lactase deficiency, participated in the study. Results indicated that the substitution for milk by yogurt reduced malabsorption of lactose and tended to improve lactose intolerance and diarrhoea, suggesting that yogurt may be an appropriate food with the aim of reducing these children's abdominal discomfort whilst providing a good source of nutrients.
