Abstract: | In 1987 a mercenary coup in the Comoro Islands ended the rule of the revolutionary leader Ali Soilih. Since that time, South Africa has sought to improve its relations with the Comoros and extend its influence with the government of that country. This article describes the background to the South African penetration of the Comoros and the nature of the relationship between both countries, and assesses some countervailing forces opposing South Africa and the possible future directions of South African-Comoran links.
