Abstract: | Although the history of the Yoruba-speaking people in the nineteenth century has attracted considerable scholarly attention, there are still many gaps in our knowledge, particularly concerning the significance of the nineteenth century, both in relation to the preceding centuries and to contemporary Nigeria; the impact of the 19th-century wars, especially on the smaller States; Yoruba subgroups other than the Oyo, such as the Igbomina and the Okun-Yoruba in northeast Yorubaland, the Ijesa, Ekiti, Owo, and Akoko in the eastern region, and the Ikale, Ilage, and Ondo in the southeast; and themes such as the Yoruba economy, social history, technology and science, and intellectual history. Finally, there is an urgent need for works of synthesis. Notes, ref. |
