Abstract:This essay examines the nature and extent of rural-urban interaction in Kenya, and how and why that interaction mediates the commonly hypothesized urban bias. Using theoretical and methodological tools developed elsewhere and particularly on the basis of the Asian experience, it considers population mobility, exchange of goods and services, assets and remittances, and flows of information and technology between rural and urban places. It is shown that the extent of interaction makes 'rural' and 'urban' a false dichotomy, and the range of interactions has markedly different effects on different regions of Kenya. Ref. (The essay is an adaptation of an article published in 'The rural-urban fringe', ed. by C. Dixon (London, 1987).)
