Abstract: | Diachronic study of the sociology of charismatic manifestations, stressing the dynamics of charisma and the social and cultural contexts in which charisma originates and operates, with the Ghanaian example of Flt. Lt. Jerry Rawlings as the main unit of analysis. In retrospect, one sees the Rawlings phenomenon as comparable to protest movements in history during which specific items in social structures are isolated for criticism, and marked for possible elimination. One also sees the yearning by a significant section of Ghanaian society to seek explanation, understanding, and reordering of the moral and social dislocations during the country's period of rapid transition and value disorientation.
