Abstract: | African archaeology is neither a luxury nor a mere intellectual, historical or cultural exercise. Evidence adduced from multidisciplinary studies of archaeology, anthropology, ethnohistory, written history, linguistics, and the natural sciences provides ample justification for asserting that Ghana had a rich and significant past from which much can be learned. The author describes the findings from ethnoarchaeological research carried out in the Hani area of northwest Brong, identified by oral traditions as the location of ancient Begho, and in the eastern Accra plains where oral traditions have identified two related Dangme townships, Se or Shai and Le or La. Data relate amongst others to traditional farming, iron metallurgy, pottery, international trade, and herbal medicine. Bibliogr. |
