Abstract:Studies of high school students in the United States have found that socioeconomic status (SES) origins exert a decisive influence on educational aspirations. By contrast, research in Ghana and the Ivory Coast has found a zero to weak influence of SES on educational aspirations. Data collected during the 1970s in Uganda indicate that the SES model for explaining aspirations is not inapplicable to Africa; it simply operates in a different time frame within the lives of Ugandan children. The influence of SES does not show up if analysis is restricted to those in senior secondary school (S5 and S6) because a major examination between S4 and S5 eliminates most of those who are not university-oriented and by the time students reach S1, most from farm families have been eliminated either by an early dropout or else by failing the examination at the end of primary 7.
