Abstract: | After a brief discussion of the historical and traditional political background of the Kanuri people of northeastern Nigeria, the author analyses the participatory politics of the Kanuri of Borno before independence and during the First and Second Nigerian Republics, on the basis of a model derived from interest/pressure group theory. The traditional political hierarchy, with the 'shehu' (king) at the apex, is a vital symbol of Kanuri collectivity and identity. This formed the base for ethnic participatory politics, through Kanuri support for the Bornu Youth Movement (BYM) in preindependence Nigeria and the First Republic, and the Great Nigeria People's Party (GNPP), the brainchild of an influential Kanuri, Alhaji Waziri Ibrahim, in the Second Republic.
