Abstract: | In addition to the names given to a person as a child, the Igbo of Nigeria take on or assume names during the next stages of their lives, though this is not compulsory. Such assumed names are the language and thoughts of the people. They are the summaries of the personalities that bear them. On the basis of names gathered in oral interviews, the author looks at the contents of these assumed names, what they mean to their bearers, the reasons for assuming a new name later on in life, and the religious significance of some assumed names.
