Abstract:This paper deals with the history of the Oromo people, their incorporation into the Ethiopian Empire, and their current situation. It pays attention to the socioeconomic conditions among the Oromo before the 19th century, the emergence of the modern State in Ethiopia toward the end of the 19th century and the feudal relationship that was imposed on the Oromo in the process of State formation, the continued oppression and Amharization under Haile Selassie, and the revolution of 1974, which has not brought any substantial change in the condition of the oppressed nations in the country in general or that of the Oromo in particular. Political oppression, material deprivation, and social discrimination of the Oromo and other nationalities have increased. The national and colonial question with which Ethiopia is faced today, requires a political solution. Notes, ref.
