Abstract: | This article analyses inter-Maghribi relations since 1969. The fundamental question it attempts to answer is what purpose do unions and mergers serve in North Africa? Are they merely fulfilling the ideological dreams of the States' leaders or do they play a more significant political role? Second, under what conditions do they materialize? Third, why do these unions, mergers, or federations dissolve or break up? And, finally, why do some of the proposed unions or mergers never materialize while others do? The principal alliances discussed are the Jerba Union between Libya and Tunisia (1974), the Hassi Mas'ud Treaty between Libya and Algeria (1975), the Alliance of Brotherhood and Concord between Algeria and Tunisia (1983), and the Arab-African Federation between Libya and Morocco (1984).
