Abstract:The only solution to the problems of abject poverty, famine and starvation in Africa, in particular in the arid zones south of the Sahara, is the adoption of new agricultural technology. A number of innovations are already available. However, small farmers need to be helped so that they can perceive their potential benefits. In order to do this, it is essential to understand the small farmer's perception of his environment and farm management decision processes. The author provides a historical perspective on the role of environmental perception in resource utilization by arid land dwellers, indicating the failures that have occurred as a result of wrong environmental perception, examining diversification in peasant farming as a strategy for income stabilization in arid zones, and considering how environmental perception could influence the adoption of the new agricultural innovations by traditional farmers by taking into account the role of risk aversion, expected yield, yield variability, and ability to provide the required basic inputs.
