Abstract:A study was undertaken to evaluate the forage conservation status in Borno State, Nigeria, in order to be able to plan more efficient conservation methods where feasible. The study showed that 23 percent of the available forage in the State is conserved as hay, 34 percent as standing hay, and 9 percent as silage. These conserved forages account for only about 24 percent of the dry season feed needs of the livestock in the State. Some of the limitations to adequate forage conservation are identified and appropriate measures that can be undertaken to overcome them are discussed. For the overall development of the livestock industry of Borno State, the potential feed resources of both the agricultural and industrial sectors should be harnessed. For this to succeed, the traditional systems of animal husbandry must be replaced by more productive types of management. Bibliogr.
