Abstract:	Survey of the actual situation in the field of religious education in sub-Saharan Africa and of the position and role of African traditional religions therein. The first chapter provides a brief account of African and Christian education and shows how at different stages of Africa's history religious education has been part of an overall educational policy. It further offers a brief discussion of Christian education, focusing on the need for the missionary churches to reconsider their educational activities, in particular with respect to the role of religion. The second chapter deals with the history, nature, practice and future of Islamic education. The third chapter is concerned more specifically with religious education in Africa and the principal issues at stake: motives, aims, methods, religious education in school, teaching African traditional religions in school, and religious and moral education. Two case studies - Zimbabwe and Nigeria - conclude the survey. Bibliogr.
