Abstract:This paper examines the hierarchies of route quality and the nodes connected by them in a predominantly rural environment in southwestern Nigeria, the present Oranmiyan Local Government Area of Oyo State. The study draws heavily on the author's experience of the Ife region. It is believed that the identification of the spatial variation of route quality in the rural areas may serve as a guide to the various bodies presently charged with the responsibility of rural development through road construction. The following road quality characteristics are examined: type of surface, condition of road surface, width of road, road vehicular capacity, number of bends per 100 kilometres, period of motorability, width of bridge and material used, possibility of flooding. The paper starts with a discussion of a conceptual framework for the study and a description of the study area and ends with an outline of the implications of the study for rural development.
