Abstract:This article examines the operations of agribusiness in Tanzania, the development of 'casual labour', which has become a significant form of cheap labour, and the role of global financial and donor institutions in the promotion of agribusiness. The timeframe is broad, beginning from the imposition of English colonial rule in 1919, with a focus on the postwar period. The first section discusses the development of agriculture and agribusiness in Tanzania; the second analyses the development of regular, migrant, and casual labour at the macrolevel; and the third analyses production and reproduction of tea, coffee and labour power in Southern Highlands Province. The author shows that the development of agribusiness has accelerated the process of commoditization, proletarianization, and differentiation in Tanzanian society and qualitatively deepened the oppression of women, particularly those women who are peasants or casual labour.
