Abstract: | The growing size of the population of urban areas, the narrow roads, increasing car ownership and the general lack of discipline on the part of drivers, are creating new and involved traffic problems in Nigerian urban centres. In Enugu, capital of Anambra State, urban traffic problems are further exacerbated by the concentration of most of the working places in the same area, so that traffic is essentially one-directional during the morning and evening peak periods. Another factor is the existence of nine railway level crossings across major roads in the city. Against this background, the author reviews the current expansion plans for the city of Enugu and examines some of the implications of these expansion plans for present and future traffic flow in the city. The paper suggests the relocation of some activity centres so as to minimize present and anticipated bottlenecks, as well as the construction of automobile flyovers over some of the city's nine railway level crossings.
