Abstract: | Mary Leakey's excavations fifty years ago on both sides of Hyrax Hill by Nakuru in the elevated part of the Kenya Rift revealed three clear periods of activity there. The more recent expansion of research, assisted by new techniques and in particular radiocarbon dating, allows the different periods of activity at Hyrax Hill to be considered in a clearer, chronological scheme and in fuller cultural and ecological contexts. This article is concerned with excavations on Site II of Hyrax Hill, undertaken by the author in 1985. Aim of the excavations was to collect information on the Sirikwa, an early Kalenjin population living principally by herding before the Masaai expansion. This article describes the excavations, the Sirikwa economy, technology, pottery and culture; it estimates the date of emergence of the Sirikwa; and it discusses the role of the Sirikwa in the Western highlands of Kenya in their time.
