Abstract: | Although the various Hausa dialects differ little phonologically, morphologically, semantically, and syntactically, there are some differences in the use of taboo words. Taboo words in Hausa concern body excretions, genital organs, personal names and kinship terms, sexual terms, names of certain creatures, abusive terms, and diseases. The present article highlights particular taboo words and discusses dialect variations. It also pays some attention to non-linguistic avoidance behaviour among the Hausa. Bibliogr., notes. |
