Abstract:The Zambian Election Act of 1973 and the Electoral Rules and Regulations which followed strengthened the role of the United National Independence Party (UNIP) by assigning it the tasks of candidate selection, formulation of election programmes, and handling election campaigns for both the Parliamentary and Presidential elections. This paper examines the extent to which the electoral system achieved the goals for which it had been designed, viz. national stability and integration. Evidence from the 1973, 1978, and 1983 elections shows that there has been considerable reduction in the sectionalism, violence and intimidation which preceded the birth of the one-party State. Ref.
