Abstract: | Description of funeral rites among the Ezon of Bendel State, Nigeria. Attention is paid to the relation between cause of death and type of ritual, ritual crying, preparations for interment, interment, the mourning period, the religious implications of the funeral rites (certification of death by the community, initiation into the cult of the ancestors, ritual bathing of the corpse), rites connected with untimely death, and beliefs about the afterlife.
