Abstract:This chapter presents the results of a study carried out in the floodplain forest of the Lower Tana River of Kenya. It describes how the Bura irrigation scheme has greatly increased the fuelwood demand in the Lower Tana because of totally inadequate provision of wood for the scheme. Poor allocation of funding by aid agencies and lack of coordination between Kenyan Government departments are the principal causes of this situation. Prior to irrigation scheme construction, a rapidly growing local population on the floodplain was already causing marked depletion of forest areas, but the problem has been greatly magnified by irrigation scheme construction. A study of fuelwood use in both irrigation scheme villages and in floodplain villages has been compared with wood availability in the forest. The results show that wood depletion in most major forest areas will occur over the next five years. Bibliogr.
