Abstract: | Overview of the positive and negative factors associated with the dissemination of the Lorena cookstove and its derivatives, particularly in the Sahel. The author argues that the latent functions of the traditional cooking fire must be taken into account if more efficient cooking technology is to be successfully disseminated. The current design of the Lorena stove should therefore be modified to approximate the same complex of benefits offered by the open hearth: heat, light, and community, as well as a cooking flame. His conclusion is that 'appropriate' technologies are needed in the Sahel, but that it's very difficult to develop them correctly for different local situations or disseminate them broadly. Notes. |
