Abstract: | This report has been prepared as a contribution to a concerted effort within the World Bank to define more explicitly its policies towards water resources management in sub-Saharan Africa. It is based on the findings of two missions, one in November 1992, the other in April/May 1993, which visited the following river basin organizations (RBOs) and regional organizations associated with international river basin development: Lake Chad Basin Commission, Niger Basin Authority, Organisation pour la mise en valeur du fleuve Sénégal, Organisation pour la mise en valeur du fleuve Gambie, Kagera Basin Organization, Énergie des Grands Lacs, Environment and Land Management Unit, Zambezi Action Plan coordinating unit at ZESCO (Zambia Electricity Supply Commission), Lesotho Highlands Development Authority, and Zambezi River Authority. The mission also held discussions with the Department of Water Affairs (Pretoria). The forms and objectives of the RBOs are analysed, their achievements reviewed, and ingredients for their success in the future outlined. |
