Abstract:This article on mass migration in southern Africa first presents the global context of migration. Then it deals with major categories of migrants in southern Africa (brain drain and unskilled/illegal migrants); the causes of migration in this area (sociocultural, the communication and technology revolution, geographical proximity, precedent, demographic, environmental, economic and political factors); and its effects (economic, sociocultural and political). Finally, it addresses the question of how southern Africa should, or could, manage the migrant issue. It pays attention to two broad approaches to controlling or stemming tides of migration: the 'carrot' and the 'stick'. Note, ref.
