| Abstract: | This book analyses the problem of internal refugees in Sudan during the 1980s in the context of drought, political instability, civil war, and resulting famines. The immediate background of the current crisis is the ascendancy of politicized Islam since 1983 and the resumption of civil war. The government of Nimeiri denied the existence of natural drought and famine during the early 1980s, and the subsequent governments of Sadiq Al-Mahdi and General Al Bashir have denied the current man-made famine and dislocation of people caused by civil war. The displacement crisis is rooted in misguided development strategies, which have led to the marginalization of segments of Sudanese society. The regimes' policies towards the displaced have actually intensified their plight. Topics discussed are environmental causes and implications of population displacement (by M.E. Abu Sin); displacement and migration as a consequence of development policies (Hassaballa O.
