Abstract:In 1960 a large-scale soil restoration programme was launched in Algeria, the Rural Renovation programme. The programme was founded on the idea of expanding the area of productive land, especially in the semiarid zone. This was to be achieved by revolutionary methods of soil restoration. The aim was to treat nearly half of northern Algeria, over a period of 15 years. This investment in infrastructure was seen as only the first part of a programme that must include changes in crops and methods of cultivation, in animal husbandry, and above all in education, habitat and social services. The programme as a whole was never officially adopted. Soil restoration was started in six pilot zones and after independence the work was carried on at a reduced rate in two of the zones. After the overthrow of Ben Bella in 1965 activity was halted. The central criticism of the programme has been directed against its allegedly authoritarian character, but there has also been criticism on the technical level. Bibliogr.
