Abstract: | A common stereotype of pastoralism is that men carry out all the significant phases of animal husbandry. However, the role played by women in (agro)pastoral societies is far greater than originally believed. Examples exist throughout Africa of (agro)pastoralist societies where women are actively involved in animal husbandry, especially when it comes to milking, cow and calf health, and control over livestock products. Two case studies illustrate this point: the agropastoralist women of Central Chad and the Dodoth in the Karamoja region of northeast Uganda. |
