Abstract: | Botswana at independence (in 1966) felt a good deal of disillusionment concerning the system of education derived from the British colonial period. Thus, it formulated its own national educational ideal based upon the Tswana philosophy of life and the country's particular educational needs: 'Education for 'Kagisano''. The closest English equivalent of 'Kagisano' is 'peaceful coexistence'. It is clear that national political expectations, already articulated by the BDP (Botswana Democratic Party) in the principles of democracy, unity, development and self-reliance and characterized by the concept of 'Kagisano' shaped this formulation. At the same time the work of the Botswana National Education Commission gave rise to the addition of the related principles of social justice and a sense of community and mutual responsibility, which underscored the national pursuit of community rather than individual interests. Furthermore, it is clear that the principles of 'Education for 'Kagisano'' have not remained empty ideals but have conferred a specific content on Botswana's educational policies and practices. Ref. |
