Abstract: | This article presents the main findings of a survey aimed at collecting socioeconomic data of the inhabitants of the black townships of the Vaal Triangle Complex. The survey was held in the last quarter of 1991 and the townships surveyed were Sebokeng, Evaton, Bophelong, Boipatong, Sharpville, Zamdela and Rafenkgotso. The topics examined include the unemployment rate, sectors of employment, average total income, formal and informal sector income, other income, average monthly expenditure of households, and expenditure on food, clothing, furniture, housing, and transport. A comparison of household income to the household subsistence level (HSL) shows that 30,1 percent of the households receive an income lower than the HSL figure as calculated for the specific household. Although about a third of the economically active population is unemployed, it seemed that, at the time of the survey the average household still had some employed members that were supporting the unemployed and keeping the monthly income well above the HSL. It is, however, believed that this situation has deteriorated drastically since the time of the survey. Ref. |
