Abstract:This paper raises some issues relating to the general state and organization of social science research on development in Africa. It briefly discusses the strengths and weaknesses of the main centres of social science research in Africa - university departments, research institutions and government ministries - and then considers their structural arrangements, disciplinary and area specializations, and research orientation and priorities, as well as the impact of research on development policy, and the role of external research communities and agencies in strengthening African research institutes. Staff development is identified as the single most important need of research institutes in Africa. Some of the more general points made are illustrated with reference to the rural development research conducted in recent years in Kenya under the auspices of the Institute for Development Studies at the University of Nairobi.
