Abstract: | Charles George Gordon was born in England in 1833. He served in India, China, Mauritius, the Sudan and South Africa before he was sent to Khartoum in 1884. He died in Khartoum in 1885, shortly after the Mahdi's troops had taken the town after a siege of almost a year, and two days before a British relief expedition reached the city. Based on original manuscript sources, the author tells Gordon's life history. |
