Abstract: | This study evaluates the economic viability of crop production in the Gezira Irrigation Scheme and Sudan's comparative advantage in this respect. Domestic Resource Cost (DRC) ratio provides the theoretical model for the determination of comparative advantage. Field data were collected among 96 Gezira tenants from June 1989 to May 1990. The DRC ratios for medium-staple and long-staple cotton, wheat, groundnuts and sorghum show that, under current cost levels and yields, all crops are profitable to the producers most of the time except for sorghum. The policy implications of these results are presented in conclusion. Bibliogr., sum. in English and French. |
