Abstract:The increasing rate of deforestation due to fuelwood extraction has caused concern in Kaduna State, Nigeria. The present article reports on a study which examined the level of consumption of different fuel types in Kaduna. Firewood was found to be the most highly consumed fuel type. The study also investigated forest yield potentials in relation to firewood demand, and the prospects for using other sources of energy in order to alleviate the problems of wood scarcity. These include the introduction of improved stoves and pressure pot cookers, government subsidy on nonwood sources of energy, intensified afforestation, the tapping of solar energy, and the development of alternative sources of energy, such as wind or biogas.
