Abstract:The Samburu inhabit the plains and highlands of Samburu District in northern Kenya. This survey of Samburu plant concepts and plant use is based on data collected in 1985 and 1986. Part A, on folk taxonomy, deals with transitive taxonomy, and taxonomic problems and categories, and compares Samburu and Western taxonomy. Part B is devoted to plant use. Plants are used for human consumption, animal forage, construction, manufacture, firewood and medicine. Part C (plant vocabulary) is a list of the plants known to the Samburu presenting, for each plant, its Samburu name, its Latin name, and information on its use.
